Fabless Activities
National
Semiconductor had originally tried to outsource some of their wafer
fabrication activities with UMC, in the early 1980's. While that
was a disaster, a decade later National was ready to reconsider the
idea, and I was responsible for setting up the relationship between
National and TSMC. Over the years, along with
various management changes, we established foundry relationships with
ASMC and Chartered Semiconductor, though process transfers from the
National lines. Because National's fab in Migdal Haemek, Israel
had been spun off, it was also an external foundry.
Working with
TSMC was particularly successful, because we established production on
an automotive qualified microcontroller with FLASH memory.
After
leaving National, I had a multi-year consulting relationship with Tower
Semiconductor that reached from RFID technologies to customer support.
Having
been on all sides of the fabless business, I am particularly qualified
to help integrate the product development and qualification activities.
